How can companies bridge the generational gap between the Baby Boomers who are in charge and the Gen Yers who work for them?

The workplace has never been so crowded with employees from so many generations -- and the resulting clash of perspectives and proclivities is causing a lot of headaches for managers. In "Bridge the Age Gap," we help you understand what distinguishes each age group and what you need to do to get the most out of workers of any age.  What are some of your experiences managing a multi-generational workplace? Is Gen Y really that different from Gen X or Baby Boomers? Join the Bizmore discussion here and tell us how you deal with the age divide.

Bridging the gap between Boomers and Gen Y often requires the least amount of effort. Boomers are often the parents are even grandparents of Gen Y.  And many of these parents have been hovering over these Gen Y kids for years, hence the term "helicopter parents."

Many Baby Boomers are happy to mentor the newest generation of workers and Gen Y are generally hungry to learn, even if a bit impatient.  One of the biggest gaps - communication- becomes a great bridge builder too.  The Baby Boomers I meet are frustrated and even annoyed by the constant texting and Facebook updates of Gen Ys. But by following the best practice of reverse mentoring, Gen Y can teach Baby Boomers how social media and other technologies can help improve productivity as well as improve employee engagement, customer support, and public relations. So while the Baby Boomers are transferring the knowledge necessary to run the business, Gen Y is keeping the organization in touch with younger workers and a new marketplace.

I also recommend using two tools - CritieraOne DISC and Business Values and Motivators - to bridge the communication gaps at work.  Many times the clash points blamed on age differences have more to do with differences in interpersonal styles and motivations. It is not uncommon for me to find "intra-generational" conflict a bigger problem than "inter-generational" differences. By using one or both of these tools, people from each generation begin to see they have more in common than they initially thought.  That at least gets the conversation started.
