We've got sales people traveling all over the country carrying their smartphones and laptops and I'm a little concerned about what might happen in the event of a loss of theft of one of these devices. What are the IT and security gotchas related to mobile devices that I as a business owner need to know about?
How much time do you have to discuss this? ;-)
Out of sight, out of mind tends to be the mantra with a mobile workforce. The assumption is mobile employees will do the right things to protect their mobile devices. That's probably true...most of the time. But what about when a mobile device gets lost (an honest mistake) or, worse, stolen? The bottom line is that you have to be prepared for the worst. I know it doesn't seem like one little BlackBerry or laptop can create big problems but it can and will. Just look at the Chronology of Data Breaches. It lists big time publicly-known breaches, many of which can be traced back to someone being careless with a mobile device.
In my forthcoming blog here on Bizmore I'll be addressing the mobile device dilemma and provide you with some solutions you can use to your advantage. In the meantime, check out these blog posts I've made on mobile security, some previous articles I've written on locking down mobile devices, as well as a recent article I wrote on protecting data when it leaves the building with mobile device encryption.
