What's Your Favorite B-Book?

Creation Date : Jul 24, 2009 11:14 AM | Modification Date : Sep 4, 2009 9:18 AM

"The Functions of the Executive" by Chester Barnard, first published in 1938, is my favorite business book. It is as relevant today as it was when it was written. While Clayton Christensen's books on disruptive innovation are a close second for me, I'm still looking for a book that surpasses Barnard's.

Two books every entrepreneur should read are (1) Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand and (2) Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig.

Without a doubt, Jack Trout's Positioning. It's the clearest, smartest book on branding out there.

Re: Leading authors on business management

Expert Answer

I tend to read authors more than books…good thinkers produce good ideas. This is clearly a truncated list of authors I like to read:

I also like to work with co-authors like Wayne Brockbank, Norm Smallwood, Jon Younger, Steve Kerr, Ed Lawler, and Wendy Ulrich, who teach me.

Dave Ulrich

Dave Ulrich is a cofounder of The RBL Group and a business professor at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. He has written 15 books about human resources, including "The Leadership Code: Five Rules to Lead." Dave serves on the board of directors of Herman Miller, and is a Fellow with the National Academy of Human Resources. With his colleagues Wayne Brockbank and Jon Younger, he has articulated how the modern HR organization can be organized into shared services, centers of expertise and business partners (HR Value Proposition). He has also co-directed research on over 40,000 respondents about the competencies required for successful HR professionals (HR Competencies).

Why we buy  -  By Paco Underhill.

It will take you 3 hours to read it, and you will never look at a business transaction the same way for the rest of your life.

Not " the best"   but one everyone should read.

If you read Paco's book, follow it up with Buy-ology by Martin Lindstrom, one of the world's preeminent branders.  It's on neuromarketing.

Here's a good one - especially for helping your small business stand out and be able to compete with the big guys:

Customer Satisfaction is Worthless, Customer Loyalty is Priceless: How to Make Them Love You, Keep You Coming Back, and Tell Everyone They Know by Jeffrey Gitomer. The is man brilliant (and I miss his column in the Atlanta Business Chronicle)!

Kevin is right!

I came across Jeffrey Gitomer's books.   Tons of useful information in there.  Wish I found it months ago.
